The Rayovac SE3DLNCOM lantern is versatile.  Use this when camping, working in your shop, or as an emergency light if the power goes out.  Small enough to store in your car for emergency use and powerful enough to light up an extended area.

This lantern has been available since early 2012 online at the Rayovac site. Also available at Amazon at a much better price from my observation.

Great lantern for those that want high powered light that doesn't take up much space. To put the size in perspective, the SE3DLNCOM is shorter than two soda cans stacked on top of each other and narrower than two soda cans side by side. Since it is designed to be water resistant and comes with LEDs that typically last for a very, very long time, this is perfect for rugged conditions.

This lantern uses 4 watt LED (light emitting diode) lights. LEDs have been around for awhile, what has limited its widespread adoption as a replacement for incandescent lights is cost. That is becoming less and less of a factor as prices have come down. The benefits of LEDs is that they burn a lot less energy than regular lights and they last a lot longer. In this case, they are designed to last 100,000 hours. The lantern runs on three D batteries that you need to provide. You can get 40 hours of run time on the highest 240 lumen setting and 90 hours on the low poser setting. The 100k hours equates to over 11 years of continuous use. Try leaving a regular bulb on for that long and see what happens.

One useful feature about this 7.28 inch tall lantern is that you can hang it from the top or bottom. You might think, what's the big deal about that. From looking at the picture of the lantern, you can see the black handle that swings open for holding and hanging. What you don't see is the much smaller hook that pops out of the bottom so you can hang it upside down. My suggestion is that when you do hang it upside down, twist the top off. Now you have a light that is unfiltered, i.e - possibly a little bit brighter, and takes up less space.

One other feature that falls in the very useful category is the "easy to find" green LED light that blinks every five seconds when the lantern is off. If you are thinking that is going to drain the batteries quickly, think again. This is a low power lantern and blinking a small LED light every few seconds takes very little power. The upside is that you can easily locate the lantern in the dark - think the power going out at night in your home and you are stumbling around in the basement wondering where the flashlights are.

Small, compact, this Rayovac lantern is the ideal long lasting lantern that you want to have readily available when it gets dark.
