The Brunton O.S.S. 70M is effectively the next generation of the popular Eclipse 8099.  Not just a spin off with a different paint job, the 70M includes the O.S.S. alignment system.

You can buy this compass at Amazon, among other sites. There is certainly a better price to be had Amazon versus other online retailers or at old fashion off line stores. You would be wise to consider purchasing from Amazon when you are ready to buy. Yes, I do get a commission. And yes, you save money. That's what I call win-win.

Before you go away, I should probably make it worth your while to show up and read about the Brunton O.S.S. 70M. From what I can tell, this is the top of the line Brunton compass and represents the zenith of portable navigation systems.

There certainly is a lot packed in on this compass. This model carries over a number of features from the Eclipse 8099 including the including the three clinometers (unfortunately, reviews are that one one out of three is any good ... if this was baseball, that would be great, however we are not playing baseball here, are we). What's different is that this uses Brunton's O.S.S. alignment system for even better accuracy. The literature says this delivers 1 degree resolution. Field reports in the form of customer reviews indicate this is true. While a lot of compasses advertise 1 degree accuracy, very few deliver. The 70M apparently does deliver the goods.

This is a sturdy model with a grippy (is that even a word?) rubber shoe for preventing slipping in the field, a dial with jeweled bearing features for 1 degree gradations, tool free declination system. The "tool free" declination has you turning the bottom plate until the alignment arrow is positioned at the correct offset from zero followed by lining up the magnetic needle with the previously mentioned offset arrow ... and magic you have readings that are accurate as possible.

Like most quality compasses, this is certainly not heavy, just 3.6 ounces and measuring 4.1 inches by 2.5 inches by 1 inch. Includes a protective cover with sighting mirror and a lanyard.

You can't really go wrong with a Brunton compass. The professional 70M is even more accurate than its predecessor with the O.S.S. system. Get it now while you have the opportunity.
